SeniorNet Learning Center
The JCC SeniorNet of
Staten Island opened on February 17, 1993. Sam Finkelstein,
Dr. Stephen Fromer and Bea Victor collaborated with JCC's Director
of Senior Programs, Evelyn Baron, in obtaining a Learning Center
grant from SeniorNet's national headquarters in San Francisco
which has since relocated to Santa Clara.
The Learning Center is furnished with the latest computers connected
by a network to the Internet. Courses are for beginners as
well as more advanced students and all courses are taught by senior
volunteers.

SeniorNet
SeniorNet is a 501(c)3 nonprofit
organization of computer-using adults, age 50 and older.
SeniorNet's mission is to provide older adults education for and access
to computer technologies to enhance their lives and enable them to share
their knowledge and wisdom.
The organization has benefited millions
of seniors since its founding in 1986 by Mary Furlong, a professor at
the University of San Francisco; supports
over 240 Learning Centers throughout the U.S. and in other
countries; publishes a quarterly newsletter and a variety of
instructional materials; offers discounts on computer-related and other
products and services; holds regional conferences and collaborates in
research on older adults and technology. SeniorNet operates the
National SeniorNet's web site at http://www.SeniorNet.org, where all
individuals 50 and older and others who are interested in the SeniorNet
community, whether or not they are members of SeniorNet, are welcome to
participate in our online communities and the hundreds of discussion
topics offered on these sites. Here, on the Web, the discussion
boards are called the
SeniorNet Round Tables - be sure not to leave without visiting!
SeniorNet grew out of a research
project funded by the Markle Foundation in 1986 to determine if
computers and telecommunications could enhance the lives of older
adults.
An international, nonprofit
organization based in Santa Clara, California, SeniorNet is funded by
membership dues, Learning Center fees, the altruistic donations of
individuals and the generous sponsorship of many companies and
foundations.

Who are we?
SeniorNet members learn and teach
others to use computers and communications technologies to
accomplish a variety of tasks. They learn to touch up photos and
send and receive them in email, to desktop publish anything from
a newsletter to an autobiography, manage personal and financial
records, communicate with others across the country and the
world and serve their communities.
SeniorNet members share a desire to continue learning and a
willingness to contribute their knowledge to others.
What do we do?
We offer courses in computer subjects for senior citizens,
(50 plus) mainly
in the Staten Island area. We conduct Classes and have Lab
time for students to practice their lessons on, surf the Web or
just play.

Why should you join
SeniorNet?
How many times have you heard your children and grandchildren talk
about "Surfing the Net"? Have you felt left out of the
Computer revolution? You can learn to use a personal computer
to write letters, balance your budget, keep records, and send e-mail
to family and friends all over the world.
Join SeniorNet at the JCC Learning Center and learn to explore the
Internet. All members are welcome to use the computers during
Lab time without having to own a computer or pay monthly fees.
The Internet connects tens of thousands of computers and millions of
people and services around the world. You've heard about the Web,
and WWW.Com (dot.Com). Meet new friends share information,
join chat rooms and investigate new sites. Soon you will be
speaking Cyberspace language and your friends will be wondering how
you got so smart. You can set your own pace and learn as
little or as much as you wish. But no matter what you decide you'll
be glad you did.
Our senior members are very enthusiastic about entering cyberspace.
E-mail (electronic mail) is enormously popular and seniors can now
be in touch with family and friends daily, no matter where they
live. So welcome aboard the on-line way to communicate.

We need volunteers. We need you!
"Seniors Teaching Seniors"
If someone helped you learn what you know about computers, then
can you help us do the same for our senior citizens. They
are eager to learn how to use their computers.
If you have a few hours a month, that's all we need. Help us
as an assistant, then step up to teach some courses!
